DHY 224 - Dental Hygiene Public Health

2 credit hours - One hour of lecture weekly and four hours of clinical weekly; one term.
Describe the impact dental health care can have through community service programs and prevention programs. Explore the history of public health, program planning and evaluation, health promotion, oral health education, and epidemiology and research. Implement methods for oral health promotion and education in the clinic and a community setting. Lab fee $250. Clinical fee $100.

Prerequisite(s): DHY 200 , DHY 202 , DHY 204 , and DHY 206  with a grade of C or better in each course.

Corequisite(s): DHY 220 , DHY 222 , and DHY 226 .

Course Outcomes:
  1. Explain the history and the importance of public health for dentistry.
  2. Explain ethical and legal principles in public health service.
  3. Describe how epidemiology helps dental public health.
  4. Develop a community dental health program that can be implemented.
  5. Assess community dental health prevention programs completed in the past.
  6. Describe and implement methods for oral health promotion and education for community-based learning.
  7. Explore strategies to prepare for success on the national board examination.
