PSY 224 - Multicultural Psychology

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Examine the role of culture in the psychological development of individuals and groups. Explore topics such as privilege, sexuality and gender, abnormal psychology, motivation, development, violence and social interaction.

Prerequisite(s): PSY 111 or PSY 111H or permission of department chair.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Define multicultural psychology and identify the key theoretical approaches and research goals for multicultural studies
Define and describe the concepts of social privilege and power and how biases present in language and perception
Define cultural literacy and describe the relationship between culture, IQ, emotional expression, and social justice
Identify basic human motives and the distinction between human development and socialization
Define gender and identify cultural gender stereotypes
Identify two views on culture and psychopathology
Describe a group and the kinds of social influences that impact cultural norms, attitude, values, and social attribution
