PSY 225 - Psychology and Law

3 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term.
Examine the science of psychological theory and research as it applies to the legal system. Topics include eyewitness memory, interrogations and confessions, lie detection, jury decision making, and insanity evaluations.

Prerequisite(s): PSY 111 or PSY 111H or permission of the Academic Chair.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Identify and describe major areas of overlap between psychology and law.
Describe the role of forensic psychologists working in criminal and civil courts.
Use psychological knowledge to evaluate the policies and procedures in the judicial system.
Recognize the influence of stereotypes, prejudice, bias, and discrimination in the judicial system.
Describe the career opportunities and the education and training required in the field.
Use APA Style to describe and evaluate psychological research on the topic of law and human behavior.
Communicate information about the field of psychology and law to diverse audiences.
